ANDREA

Three days, that’s how long it’d been. Three excruciating days of waiting, listening, jumping at strange noises. Of standing by the window and analyzing the face of every man walking by my office on the street. Of second-guessing the motive of anyone looking at my office building. Of thinking the worst of every car that moved in behind whatever vehicle I rode in.

I thought maybe it would be over really fast and Ben would have made a move by now, if he was even here in Phoenix, and the police would have captured him. End of story.

I forgot how much patience the man had. There were times in which I had done something to displease him—not wiping down the countertops perfectly or leaving a hairbrush out on my dresser because I got sidetracked and forgot to put it back where it belonged. He would wait for the perfect opportunity, a time I wouldn’t have my guard up and then he would strike. Out of nowhere, his fist would fly out of the darkness and strike.

So I got up and I went to work, I met Joe for coffee and I went home. Three days of a normal routine during a time that was so far from normal. The police had no idea where he was. James was always beside me, watching and waiting. The next two nights I would be staying overnight at Hope House and I prayed to God he didn’t decide to make a move then.

I checked in several times daily to see if anything out of the ordinary had happened but it’d been status quo. We only had two families staying in Scottsdale right now—one woman with an infant, and another with three children, the oldest, a boy of ten.

I arrived at Hope House at four to help with dinner. Danny, the ten-year-old, was shooting baskets in the driveway when I pulled up and entered a code to open the electronic gates that had been installed two years ago for security.

Pulling off to the side, I reached into the back seat to grab the supplies I picked up. When I turned, Danny was right next to me, startling me and making me jump back.

“Oops,” I cried out as I stumbled back into my car door, clutching the bags.

“Sorry,” Danny told me as he reached for the bags in my arms. “I didn’t mean to scare you, Miss Andrea.”

“It’s okay, Danny. I should have been paying more attention. It was my own fault.”

I handed him one of the bags and we walked toward the house. The sun was still bright and the air stifling. A breeze would have cooled things down a bit but we weren’t so lucky today. The air conditioner was humming as we entered the house, giving respite to the heat outside.

The television was on softly, a Disney movie playing. Two little girls were held spellbound watching the princesses dance, while a baby slept in a carrier tucked into a corner out of the sunlight.
